Integrated Assessment of Economic Supply and Environmental Effects of Biomass Co-Firing in Coal Power Plants: A Case Study of Jiangsu, China

The technical supply potential of biomass and the associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are widely studied in literature. However, relatively few studies have examined role co-firing for future electricity China by integratedly considering economic GHG effects. To fill this gap, we choose Jiangsu Province as a case study build up partial equilibrium model with multiple agricultural commodities. Using combined life cycle assessment, jointly determine purpose social benefits, including producers’ surplus mitigation potential. simulation incorporates county-level market various crop residues well endogenous prices transportation costs. We find that 0.7–12.5 M MT residue-based economically viable coal-based power plants (up to 20%) at between USD 50 100/MT. net savings achieved these from 3.2 59 MTCO2e. Our findings indicate coal would be feasible low-carbon energy transition pathway if price is above 50/MT.
